ASX/200 Closed Lower By 0.08%; Dragged down by Consumer Discretionary
By the end of the trading session on 28 September 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.08% and settled at 7,024.80. Out of 11 sectors, 09 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.
Energy and Materials sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 2.75% and 0.40% respectively in their index values. Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples sectors were the top-declining sectors, gaining 1.09% and 0.79% respectively in their index values.
Whitehaven Coal Limited (ASX: WHC) and Resmed Inc. (ASX: RMD) were the top gainers, with 6.060% and 4.828% growth in share prices, respectively. Brickworks Limited (ASX: BKW) and Washington H Soul Pattinson & Company Limited (ASX: SOL) were the top losers, with 6.416% and 6.031% drop in share prices, respectively.
Brickworks witnessed a 6.4% decline in its stock value following a reported 54% decrease in net profit, which amounted to $395 million during the 2023 fiscal year.
Washington H Soul Pattinson, a conglomerate holding stakes in New Hope and Brickworks, experienced a 6% drop in its share price after disclosing a 9% decrease in "regular profit," totaling $759.3 million for the entire year.
Premier Investments saw a slight decrease in its stock value, slipping 0.5%, subsequent to Solomon Lew's company reporting a 4.9% decline in full-year net profit, amounting to $271 million.
The bond market faced renewed selling pressure due to oil prices reaching their highest point of the year. This surge was triggered by a decrease in US crude stockpiles at the Cushing storage facility, which dipped just below 22 million barrels, nearing operational minimums.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average concluded with a 0.20% decrease, the S&P 500 remained nearly unchanged with a 0.02% increase, and the NASDAQ showed a 0.22% rise in its closing value.
The Hang Seng index experienced a notable decline of -1.33%, while the FTSE 100 also recorded a negative movement of -0.43% on the same day.
