ASX 200 Ended Lower By 0.27%, Weighed Down By Consumer Staples
By the end of the trading session on 13 April 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.27% and settled at 7,316.50. Out of 11 sectors, 3 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200.
Information Technology and Energy sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 0.99% and 0.88% respectively in their index values. Consumer Staples and Consumer Discretionary Sectors were the top declining sector, declining 1.19% and 0.65% in their respective index values.
Corporate Travel Management Limited (ASX: CTD) and Nickel Industries Limited (ASX: NIC) were the top gainers, with 12.063% and 5.347% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, BLOCK INC (ASX: SQ2) and Champion Iron Limited (ASX: CIA) were the top losers, with a 5.784% and 3.957% drop in share prices, respectively.
Corporate Travel Management Limited’s share price gained today after the company informed the market that it won a contract with the U.K. Home Office.
Australia’s jobless rate was 3.5% in March, against forecasts of 3.6%. During the month, 53,000 jobs were created, far above estimates of 20,000.
Beach Energy, an oil and gas producer, reported a 5% decline in production during the March quarter to 4.5 million barrels of oil. The reduced output was attributed to a gas surplus and a planned shutdown of one of its mines.
Following an optimistic labor force report, the Australian dollar surpassed US67¢. This development strengthens the argument for the Reserve Bank of Australia to maintain high interest rates for an extended period.
On Wednesday, oil prices climbed 2%, reaching their highest level in over a month, after the release of cool U.S. inflation data raised expectations that the Federal Reserve is approaching the end of its cycle of interest-rate hikes.
The Dow, S&P 500, and NASDAQ all experienced a decline of 0.11%, 0.41%, and 0.85%, respectively.
Hang Seng index fell by 0.75%, and the FTSE 100 rose by 0.50% today.
