Introduction:

Lithium (Li) is a soft, silvery-white alkali metal with atomic number 3. It is the lightest metal and the least dense solid element under standard conditions. Highly reactive and flammable, lithium must be stored in inert environments such as kerosene, mineral oil, or a vacuum. On exposure to air, it quickly corrodes and develops a black tarnish.

Because of its extreme reactivity, lithium does not occur freely in nature but is extracted from mineral ores and brines. Today, it is a cornerstone of the clean-energy transition, with its demand soaring due to its critical role in rechargeable batteries.

Sources of Lithium

Lithium is typically sourced from two main forms: hard-rock mining and brine extraction.

Key Minerals Containing Lithium:

  • Spodumene (LiAlSi₂O₆) – the primary hard-rock source.
  • Lepidolite (K₂Li₃Al₄Si₇O₂₁(OH,F)₃) – a lithium-rich mica.
  • Petalite (LiAlSi₄O₁₀) – once widely used in glass and ceramics.
  • Amblygonite (LiAl(F,OH)PO₄) – a phosphate mineral.

Extraction Process

Brine Extraction dominates global supply, particularly in South America’s “Lithium Triangle” (Chile, Argentina, Bolivia).

  1. Brine is pumped from beneath salt flats into vast evaporation ponds.
  2. Over 12–18 months, the brine evaporates, leaving behind concentrated salts containing lithium, potassium, and magnesium.
  3. Lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide is refined from this concentrated brine, forming the feedstock for lithium-ion batteries.

Hard-Rock Mining, especially in Australia, uses spodumene ore. After crushing and processing, lithium concentrate is shipped globally for conversion into battery chemicals.

Major Lithium-Producing Countries (2024–2025)

According to the latest 2024 production data:

  • Australia – continues as the world’s largest producer, with Western Australia leading spodumene mining.
  • Chile – the top brine producer, benefiting from the Atacama Desert’s rich salt flats.
  • China – dominant in refining capacity and downstream battery production.
  • Argentina – fast-rising production, with multiple new brine projects coming online.

Other emerging producers include Canada, Brazil, and Zimbabwe.

Lithium’s versatility extends beyond batteries:

  • Rechargeable Batteries – the primary driver of demand, powering electric vehicles (EVs), smartphones, laptops, and energy storage systems.
  • Non-Rechargeable Batteries – used in pacemakers, watches, and specialized electronics.
  • Alloys – magnesium-lithium alloys for lightweight armour and aluminium-lithium alloys in aircraft, trains, and bicycles.
  • Glass and Ceramics – lithium oxide improves strength and thermal resistance.
  • Air Treatment – lithium chloride’s strong hygroscopic properties make it useful in dehumidification.
  • Lubricants – lithium stearate is valued for high-temperature applications.
  • Pharmaceuticals – lithium carbonate remains an important treatment for bipolar disorder.
  • Hydrogen Storage – lithium hydride is studied as a hydrogen carrier.

How Lithium-Ion Batteries Work

A lithium-ion cell contains:

  • Anode and Cathode for lithium storage.
  • Electrolyte carrying Li-ions between electrodes.
  • Separator preventing direct electron flow.

During discharge, lithium ions move from anode to cathode, releasing electrons that flow through the external circuit to power devices. Recharging reverses this process, making them efficient, lightweight, and rechargeable hundreds of times.

Lithium Availability and Reserves

Lithium represents only 0.007% of Earth’s crust, but significant deposits exist globally. Current known reserves exceed 26 million tonnes (as of 2024), sufficient to meet projected demand for decades, provided investment in extraction and refining keeps pace.

  • Over the past decade, lithium prices have surged due to accelerating EV adoption.
  • The Solactive Global Lithium Index, which tracks companies involved in lithium production and battery manufacturing, has grown nearly threefold since 2015.
