Northern Star Resources Rejects Gold Fields Proposal

Northern Star Resources Ltd was among the strongest movers, with its shares rising 6.58% to AU$23.565. In an ASX announcement on 28 September 2026, Northern Star stated that it had assessed and declined a confidential, unsolicited and conditional non-binding takeover proposal from Gold Fields Limited. The proposal, received on 14 September, contemplated the acquisition of all Northern Star shares through a scheme of arrangement.

The proposed consideration comprised 0.3125 new Gold Fields shares and AU$7.25 in cash for each Northern Star share. Using Gold Fields’ closing share price on 11 September, the offer valued each Northern Star share at AU$27.00, implying an overall equity valuation of approximately AU$38.7 billion. Northern Star’s Board said it considered the proposal to materially undervalue the company and highlighted upcoming catalysts, including the commissioning and ramp-up of the Fimiston Mill.

Ingenia Communities Receives Higher Takeover Offer

Ingenia Communities Group gained 5.33% to AU$4.740 following a further revised non-binding indicative proposal from Warburg Pincus. The 28 September 2026 announcement stated that Warburg Pincus had put forward a proposal to acquire all of Ingenia’s issued capital via a scheme of arrangement at AU$5.25 cash per stapled security, subject to deductions for any distributions made before implementation.  The proposal follows earlier approaches of AU$4.75 and AU$5.05.

Warburg Pincus has requested that Ingenia’s Board agree to full due diligence terms and confirm its intention to recommend the proposal by 2 October 2026, subject to various conditions. Warburg Pincus expects the due diligence process to be completed within approximately six to eight weeks.

Suncorp Continues AU$250 Million Buyback

Suncorp Group Limited shares climbed 2.86% to AU$19.090. According to its 28 September 2026 ASX announcement, Suncorp bought back 133,269 ordinary shares on 25 September for approximately AU$2.48 million. The highest price paid was AU$18.88, while the lowest was AU$18.56. The company intends to buy back up to AU$250 million of fully paid ordinary shares under the on-market program. The buyback commenced on 25 September 2026 and is scheduled to run until 30 June 2027.

Market Outlook

The three stocks attracted investor attention on 28 September following significant company-specific developments. Northern Star’s takeover proposal rejection, Ingenia’s higher acquisition offer and Suncorp’s ongoing capital management program provided distinct catalysts for the respective share-price moves. The next developments to watch include further corporate activity around Northern Star, Ingenia’s response to the revised Warburg Pincus proposal and the continued execution of Suncorp’s buyback program.
