Highlights
Shareholder profit increased 29%, putting the drivers of earnings growth in focus.
Superannuation inflows supported record managed funds despite challenging investment conditions.
FY2027 expansion plans bring spending discipline and customer retention into sharper focus.
Australian Ethical Investment Limited (ASX: AEF) published its FY2026 annual report on 9 October 2026, presenting stronger earnings, record managed funds and priorities for further expansion. Its financial results, previously announced on 25 August 2026, showed profit growing faster than revenue, although fee margins softened as the product mix changed.
Earnings Strengthen as Efficiency Improves
Revenue reached AU$129.5 million for the year ended 30 June 2026, increasing 9%. Net profit attributable to shareholders advanced 29% to AU$25.7 million, while underlying profit after tax increased 15% to AU$27.3 million.
The underlying measure excludes specified adjustments, offering a separate basis for assessing earnings alongside the statutory result.
Australian Ethical’s underlying cost-to-income ratio improved to 69.8%, compared to 71.4% in FY2025. This indicates that underlying expenses consumed a smaller proportion of income, supporting profitability.
Total dividends for the year amounted to 18 cents per share, including a fully franked final dividend of 10 cents.
Superannuation Leads Customer Inflows
Funds under management reached AU$14.5 billion at June-end, increasing 4% annually. Average managed funds grew 11%, helping lift revenue alongside a full-year contribution from the Altius fixed-income business.
Organic net inflows totalled AU$664 million, with superannuation contributing AU$527 million. Institutional net inflows added AU$173 million, while investment performance contributed AU$187 million to managed funds.
Continued customer inflows provided support during a difficult investment environment. However, the revenue generated from additional assets depends on the products attracting those funds.
The average revenue margin declined to 0.91%, compared to 0.92% in FY2025, primarily reflecting the full-year impact of lower-margin assets acquired through Altius.
Outlook: Balancing Expansion With Cost Control
Management expects positive net inflows in FY2027, supported by superannuation and expanding middle-market distribution. The Growth Opportunities Fund broadens its offering to this segment.
Revenue margins are expected to remain broadly consistent with the June 2026 level of 0.89%, subject to product mix.
Investment priorities include platform upgrades, a superannuation mobile application and broader digital improvements. These initiatives aim to strengthen service, efficiency and customer engagement. Future earnings progress will depend on attracting and retaining funds while managing expenditure, with uncertain markets remaining a potential obstacle to asset growth.
