Iron Ore Enters Strongest Seasonal Period as Fortescue Faces Mounting China Demand Risks
Source: Kapitales Research
Highlights:
Iron ore historically gains 14.4% between November and January, but can seasonal strength return?
China's manufacturing slowdown and rising inventories threaten iron ore's anticipated year-end recovery.
Fortescue shares have fallen nearly 35% as unresolved Chinese buyer negotiations threaten production stability.
Iron Ore Approaches Historically Strong Trading Period
Iron ore markets are entering a historically favourable seasonal period, although weakening Chinese demand and growing supply concerns could restrict price recovery. According to market analysis published, iron ore has recorded an average gain of 14.4% between November and January since 2010, delivering positive returns in 11 of 16 years. December has historically been particularly favourable, averaging a 6.4% increase. However, iron ore prices have declined approximately 6% in 2026 to US$91 per tonne, highlighting the challenging market environment.
China's slowing industrial activity continues to undermine confidence in iron ore demand. Manufacturing activity weakened in October as the country’s Purchasing Managers’ Index slipped from 50.1 in September to 49.3, signalling a return to contraction. Construction activity also weakened, with its corresponding index falling to 48.0. Meanwhile, iron ore inventories across 47 monitored Chinese ports reached 173.7 million tonnes in October, approximately 15% above the previous year's level. These developments suggest that subdued steel consumption and elevated inventories could limit the effectiveness of seasonal restocking.
Fortescue Faces Growing Commercial Pressure
Australian mining company Fortescue Limited (ASX: FMG) faces additional uncertainty following prolonged negotiations with China Mineral Resources Group.
Fortescue shares have declined approximately 35%, while September-quarter shipments fell 6% to 46.8 million tonnes. Sales reached 42.9 million tonnes, leaving a substantial difference between shipments and completed transactions.
The company's net debt increased to US$2.8 billion from US$0.9 billion at June-end. Management has warned that unresolved negotiations beyond December could affect operations, potentially including production.
Iron ore's historical seasonal strength offers potential support, but China's property weakness, elevated inventories and expanding global supply remain significant obstacles. For Fortescue, progress in Chinese buyer negotiations will be particularly important. Investors should monitor steel demand, inventory movements and shipment performance to determine whether seasonal optimism can translate into sustainable earnings recovery.
