Can Iron Ore Prices Recover from Two-Year Lows as Chinese Steel Demand Weakens Further?

Can Iron Ore Prices Recover from Two-Year Lows as Chinese Steel Demand Weakens Further? Source: Kapitales Research

Highlights:

  • Iron ore prices approach two-year lows, raising concerns over a deeper market correction.
  • Weak Chinese steel demand and expanding mine supplies threaten further downward pressure.
  • Potential Chinese stimulus offers hope, but will it be enough to reverse losses?

Iron Ore Prices Face Renewed Selling Pressure

Iron ore prices remained under pressure as weakening Chinese steel demand and expectations of additional global supply weighed on market sentiment. The commodity traded at US$90.78 per tonne, declining 0.06% from the previous session. Prices have fallen 6.34% over the past month and 14.01% compared with the corresponding period last year.

Benchmark iron ore futures in Singapore were around US$90.60 per tonne. The decline highlights growing uncertainty surrounding demand from China, the world's largest steel producer and a major consumer of seaborne iron ore.

China's Steel Demand Raises Concerns

China's steel industry faces seasonal consumption weakness as construction activity slows towards year-end. Elevated steel inventories and subdued property-sector activity have also limited the willingness of mills to increase raw material purchases.

Several factors are influencing market conditions:

  • Weakening demand: Slower steel consumption is restricting iron ore purchasing activity.
  • Inventory pressures: High port stockpiles are reducing the urgency for additional shipments.
  • Supply expansion: Rising production from major exporters threatens to widen the market surplus.

These developments suggest that iron ore could remain vulnerable unless Chinese industrial activity improves or stronger policy support stimulates steel consumption.

Rising Global Supply Adds to Market Uncertainty

Supply expectations are adding another challenge for iron ore producers. Major mining companies, including Rio Tinto (ASX: RIO) and BHP Group (ASX: BHP), are expected to maintain substantial shipments, while Guinea's Simandou project continues expanding production capacity.

The additional supply could intensify competition among exporters, particularly if Chinese steelmakers continue purchasing cautiously. Meanwhile, negotiations between Chinese buyers and major Australian suppliers remain an additional factor influencing market sentiment.

Outlook: Can Chinese Stimulus Support an Iron Ore Recovery?

Iron ore's near-term outlook remains cautious as softer steel demand, seasonal weakness and increasing global supply constrain recovery prospects. Additional Chinese infrastructure spending or stronger economic stimulus could provide some support, although the timing and effectiveness of such measures remain uncertain.

Market participants will closely monitor Chinese steel production, port inventories and mining shipments for signs of improving demand conditions. Unless steel consumption strengthens or supply growth moderates, prices could face further downward pressure. A sustained recovery will likely depend on stronger industrial activity and a more balanced global iron ore market.
