29Metals Advances Copper Production Recovery as Half-Year Losses and Rising Costs Challenge Growth
Source: Kapitales Research
Highlights:
Half-year revenue increased 12.49%, but a sharp earnings reversal raised profitability concerns.
Copper production weakened during September, although resumed mining could change the outlook.
Capricorn Copper's restart progresses, with regulatory approval remaining a crucial milestone.
Financial and Operational Performance
29Metals Limited (ASX: 29M) reported its half-year financial results on 27 August 2026, followed by its September quarterly operational update on 21 October 2026. The Australian copper producer recorded higher half-year revenue but shifted into a net loss, while its latest quarterly performance reflected production disruptions and elevated operating costs. Nevertheless, progress across key mining projects could support a recovery in production.
For the six months ended 30 June 2026, 29Metals reported revenue of AU$304.85 million, compared with AU$270.99 million in the corresponding period. However, the company recorded a net loss of AU$34.84 million, reversing a net profit of AU$35.32 million in the previous year. EBITDA declined to AU$30.50 million from AU$112.61 million, reflecting increased costs and reduced insurance-related income. Operating cash flow improved to AU$65.65 million from AU$26.50 million, demonstrating stronger cash generation despite earnings pressure.
September Quarter Highlights Operational Challenges
Golden Grove produced 4.2kt of copper during the September quarter, compared with 4.8kt previously. Zinc production declined to 2.0kt from 3.1kt. Meanwhile, C1 costs increased to US$5.24 per pound from US$4.64, reflecting lower sales volumes and elevated operating expenses.
Mining Developments Strengthen Recovery Prospects
Mining resumed at Xantho Extended in October, while Gossan Valley remains positioned to deliver initial ore before year-end. Oizon also progressed towards production commencement. At Capricorn Copper, reduced water levels have removed a major restart obstacle, although tailings facility approval remains outstanding.
Outlook: Production Recovery Faces Financial Tests
Group liquidity declined to AU$142 million in September from AU$202 million in June, highlighting continued investment requirements. Looking ahead, 29Metals maintained its annual copper production guidance of 20–24kt. Successful mine ramp-ups, cost reductions and regulatory approvals will be central to improving operating performance and supporting longer-term growth.
