DXN's First US-Listed AI Customer Moves to Cancel A$8.8 Million Data Centre Contract
Source: Kapitales Research
Highlights
DXN says its maiden US-listed neo-cloud customer intends to cancel an A$8.8 million AI high-performance computing contract.
The company expects about A$4.2 million, or 48% of the contract value, to cover work already done and costs it has committed.
Backlog stood at about A$30.8 million at 30 September, and DXN is targeting A$11.0 million of first-half revenue.
Introduction
DXN Limited (ASX: DXN) disclosed on Friday that its first AI high-performance computing (HPC) customer, a US-listed neo-cloud operator, plans to cancel its contract. The news came in the modular data centre maker's September quarter activities report and Appendix 4C.
The company said the customer told it after quarter end that it intended to cancel, after that customer changed its business strategy. DXN noted that the cancellation has not been finalised.
What the Cancellation Means in Dollars
DXN first announced the A$8.8 million contract in early June 2026. It said payments are tied to progress, meaning revenue was booked as work moved forward and long-lead components were ordered.
According to the company, the customer has not challenged the amounts owed for work done so far and costs already committed. DXN expects that amount to reach about A$4.2 million, equal to 48% of what the contract was originally worth.
Of that sum, A$0.1 million was booked as revenue in the September quarter. DXN expects to book most of the rest in the December quarter, when it also expects to receive a last payment of A$1.1 million.
Follow-On Campus Unlikely
DXN said it has taken about A$8.6 million out of backlog, and it expects roughly A$4.2 million of that to still turn into revenue. The customer is also unlikely to go ahead with a bigger follow-on campus project, the company said.
DXN said the work gave it its first contracted design for dense AI HPC modules, which it can reuse for other customers.
Quarter Revenue, Backlog and Pipeline
September quarter revenue was about A$3.4 million, roughly 380% above A$0.7 million a year earlier. The company said previously deferred modular projects moved through manufacturing and delivery.
Total backlog was about A$30.8 million at 30 September, up from A$23.5 million at 30 June, after adjusting for the cancellation. The company said new contract awards drove the increase, among them an AI HPC contract worth about A$12.2 million, its second, won in August.
DXN reported 93 projects in its pipeline, against 99 in the prior quarter, with the pipeline's value up 115%. AI deals made up 28% of the pipeline.
Cash Position and Guidance
Cash at 30 September was about A$6.4 million, down from A$11.0 million at 30 June. Operating activities used a net A$4.7 million of cash over the quarter.
DXN attributed the cash movement mainly to when customers paid. It said late payments came in during October, taking cash back up to A$11.1 million as of 28 October.
For the first half of FY27, DXN expects revenue of A$11.0 million, up 307% on A$2.7 million in the prior first half. The company said a temporary manufacturing facility at Seven Hills, NSW, which starts production this quarter, will support that target.
How the Shares Traded
DXN shares were bid at AU$0.130 on Friday morning, down 50.9%. More than 33 million shares had changed hands by then.
What Investors Should Watch
Whether the cancellation is finalised and the final A$1.1 million payment arrives in the December quarter as expected.
Whether DXN delivers the A$11.0 million first-half revenue target.
Progress on the A$12.2 million AI HPC contract, which DXN expects to deliver in early 2027.
Conclusion
DXN's maiden AI HPC contract is set to end well short of its original A$8.8 million value, with roughly A$4.2 million expected for work already done. A bigger campus project with the same customer now looks unlikely, according to the company.
The company has put three figures alongside the cancellation.
