Mid-Market: S&P/ASX 200 Trading Lower; BHP Group Declined By More Than 1%

On 20 January 2026, at AEDT 12:45 PM, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 is trading lower today, declining 50.40 points or 0.57%, and is currently trading at 8,824.10 levels. Out of 11, 6 sectors are trading lower along with the decline in the S&P/ASX 200.

The Utilities and Information Technology sectors are the top 2 gaining sectors, gaining 1.11% and 0.97% in their index values. On the other hand, Materials and Financials sectors are the top 2 declining sectors, declining 0.95% and 0.82% in their index values.

Droneshield Limited (ASX: DRO) and Hub24 Limited (ASX: HUB) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 5.274% and 4.989% in their stock prices. On the other hand, ARB Corporation Limited (ASX: ARB) and Orora Limited (ASX: ORA) are the top-losing stocks and are declining by 12.102% and 7.334% in their stock prices.

Factors influencing the market-

  • Australian shares extended their decline for a second straight session, pressured by renewed trade tension concerns after US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats linked to Greenland dampened investor confidence.
  • BHP Group Limited’s shares weighed on the materials sector, falling 1.2% after it revealed first-stage costs for its Jansen potash project had climbed to US$8.4 billion — about US$1 billion above last year’s updated estimate — eclipsing stronger copper guidance and unchanged production outlooks.
  • ARB dived 12.1% after it reported unaudited sales revenue of $358 million for the half-year to December 31, down 1% on the previous corresponding period.
  • Financial services firm AMP fell 2.2% after it appointed Blair Vernon as group chief executive, with current CEO Alexis George to retire on March 30.
  • The Dow Jones closed down by 0.17%, S&P 500 declined by 0.06% and Nasdaq was down by 0.06% in the previous session.
  • Hang Seng is down by 1.05%, and FTSE 100 is down by 0.35%.
