Omega Oil & Gas Expands Taroom Trough Acreage by 63% as Canyon Wells Deliver Strong Results
Source: Kapitales Research
Highlights:
Canyon-3 intersected 526 metres of gross hydrocarbon-bearing Permian formations, with 170 metres of aggregate net pay across six reservoirs.
Operated acreage increased 63% to 2,976 square kilometres following the grant of ATP 2082.
Cash reserves stood at AU$92.9 million at 30 September 2026, with no debt and sufficient funding for the 2026/27 appraisal programme.
Omega Oil & Gas Limited (ASX: OMA) reported significant exploration progress during the September 2026 quarter, with encouraging drilling results, an expanded acreage position and a strong financial position supporting its ongoing appraisal activities in Queensland's Taroom Trough.
In its quarterly activities report released on 29 October 2026, the company described the period as transformational, following successful appraisal results from Canyon-3 and the subsequent Canyon-4 drilling programme. The findings strengthened evidence of a regionally extensive, stacked oil and gas reservoir system across its acreage.
Canyon-3 Confirms Multiple Reservoir Intervals
Canyon-3, located approximately nine kilometres from Canyon-1, intersected a 526-metre gross hydrocarbon-bearing Permian interval containing 170 metres of aggregate net pay across six stacked reservoirs.
The Canyon Sandstone recorded 18 metres of net oil-bearing sands with average porosity of 11.5%, compared with 7.4% in Canyon-1. The well also identified the Lower Kianga Sandstone as an additional high-quality gas and condensate-bearing reservoir.
Subsequent results from Canyon-4, announced on 12 October 2026, further strengthened the exploration outlook. The well intersected 589 metres of gross hydrocarbon-bearing formations, with 197 metres of aggregate net pay, the highest recorded in the Canyon appraisal programme to date.
The Canyon Sandstone delivered 11 metres of net pay at 12.1% average porosity, while the Lower Kianga Sandstone was confirmed as an oil-bearing reservoir with 10.7% average porosity.
Acreage Expansion Strengthens Exploration Position
Omega's operated acreage increased by 63% to 2,976 square kilometres following the formal grant of ATP 2082. The 1,138-square-kilometre permit is held through a joint venture comprising Omega as operator with a 45% interest, Tri-Star holding 30% and Beach Energy holding 25%.
The new permit adjoins the southern portion of the Canyon Project and provides additional opportunities to investigate the continuity of the stacked Permian reservoir system.Meanwhile, preparations continued for Canyon North-1 and Canyon North-2 in ATP 2081 to evaluate the northern extension of the petroleum system.
Strong Cash Position Supports Appraisal Programme
At 30 September 2026, Omega held AU$92.9 million in cash, compared with AU$102.1 million at the end of June 2026. The quarterly reduction primarily reflected expenditure on drilling and evaluating Canyon-3 and commencing Canyon-4.
Both wells were completed safely and within budget, with the company confirming that it remained more than fully funded for its 2026/27 appraisal programme, including planned fracture stimulation and flow testing.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Trevor Brown said the results had strengthened the company's confidence in the resource potential of the eastern Taroom Trough.
With further drilling, reservoir testing and acreage evaluation planned, Omega aims to advance its understanding of the region's hydrocarbon potential and assess opportunities for future commercial development.
