Highlights:
Orora shares tumble as management signals another challenging year for group profitability.
Strong Cans growth offers potential relief, but can it offset Glass weakness?
Orora Shares Slide Following AGM Update
Orora Limited (ASX: ORA), an Australian beverage packaging manufacturer, released its Annual General Meeting (AGM) presentation on 14 October 2026, highlighting persistent profitability challenges across its Glass operations and expectations of weaker group earnings in FY27. Following the update, Orora shares traded at a current market price (CMP) of AU$1.305, registering a decline of approximately 5.78%.
Glass Business Pressures Weigh on Earnings
Management expects FY27 group earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to fall below FY26 levels, primarily reflecting weaker Saverglass profitability and increased depreciation expenses. Saverglass continues to encounter challenging trading conditions arising from US tariffs, Middle Eastern geopolitical disruptions and changing consumer purchasing patterns. Despite achieving 5.9% volume growth during FY26, the division experienced declining profitability as demand shifted towards lower-priced packaging products. The company also recognised a substantial €449.7 million non-cash impairment against its Glass business, highlighting the deterioration in its operating outlook.
Cans Division Provides Growth Support
Orora's Cans business remains a significant operational strength, supported by expanding production capacity and sustained demand for aluminium beverage packaging. During FY26, Cans revenue increased 13.3% to AU$880 million, while EBIT advanced 7.3% to AU$111.4 million. Management anticipates FY27 Cans volume growth of approximately 4%–6%, with further benefits expected from its Rocklea capacity expansion. Meanwhile, the Glass division is pursuing operational improvements targeting more than €30 million in annualised EBIT enhancement by FY30.
Outlook: Earnings Recovery Remains Uncertain
Orora's near-term performance will depend heavily on stabilising Saverglass margins, improving operational efficiency and managing geopolitical disruptions. Although the company's Cans expansion offers encouraging growth opportunities, weaker Glass earnings and higher depreciation could constrain overall profitability. Investors will likely monitor second-half FY27 trading performance, restructuring progress and cash generation for evidence of a sustainable earnings recovery.
