Market Alert : Crude Oil Prices Decline on Easing Geopolitical Risk and Emerging Supply Expectations

ASX 200 Ended Lower; All Sectors Closed In Red Zone

By the end of the trading session on 15 June 2022, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 1.27% and settled at 6,601.00. All sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200. The Information Technology and A-REIT sectors were the top 2 losing sectors, declined 3.09% and 2.92% in their index values.



Polynovo Limited (ASX: PNV) and Lynas Rare Earths Limited (ASX: LYC) were the top gainers with 4.819% and 4.220% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Novonix Limited (ASX: NVX) and Megaport Limited (ASX: MP1) were the top losers, with a 13.637% and 11.074% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:




  • Australian shares dropped sharply as investors waited to see just how aggressive the Federal Reserve would be on rates, with many fearing drastic action would risk tipping the world into recession.

  • The fall deepened in afternoon trading as fears of stronger inflation after the Fair Work Commission raised the minimum wage, which fuelled speculation of even more aggressive tightening by the central bank.

  • Oil prices edged higher today, rebounding from losses earlier in the session amid concerns over fuel demand and the broader economy ahead of an expected big hike in interest rates by the U.S. Federal Reserve.

  • Woodside Energy fell 3.09%, Beach energy was down more than 3%, and Santos Limited also closed lower by 0.98%.

  • In the Materials sector, Mineral Resources fell almost 3.6%, OZ Minerals was down more than 2%, and BHP Group and Rio Tinto also closed lower by 0.813% and 0.081%, respectively.

  • Dow has closed down by 0.5%, S&P 500 down by 0.4%, and NASDAQ closed higher by 0.2%.

  • Hang Seng is up by 1.23%, and FTSE 100 is down by 0.25%.
