Market Alert : Global Markets Remain Sensitive to Middle East Headlines

ASX/200 Closed higher by 0.45%; lifted by Utilities

By the end of the trading session on 07 February 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.45% and settled at 7,615.80. Out of 11 sectors, 08 closed higher along with the ASX 200.

Utilities and Materials sectors were the top- gaining sectors, gaining 1.77% and 1.03% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Consumer Discretionary and Energy sector was the top-losing sector, losing 0.79% and 0.63% respectively in their index values.

Chalice Mining Limited (ASX: CHN) and Alumina Limited (ASX: AWC) were the top gainers, with 8.522% and 5.687% growth in share prices, respectively. Santo Limited (ASX: STO) and CSR Limited (ASX: CSR) were the top losers, with 5.845% and 4.533% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • CSR shares declined by 4.5% to $6.53 after UBS analysts downgraded the stock from a buy to a sell rating.
  • Amcor, a packaging giant, announced plans to cut 2000 jobs following a decrease in profit reported in its half-year report. Despite this, the company's shares increased by 1.4% to $14.52.
  • Ross McEwan, the group CEO and managing director of National Australia Bank (NAB), will step down from his position in April. He will be succeeded by Andrew Irvine, who currently serves as the bank's business banking executive. NAB's shares experienced a slight decline of 0.2% to $32.13.
  • Oil prices saw a slight increase in range-bound trading as investors assessed changing risks in the Middle East alongside hawkish statements from the Federal Reserve.
  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up by 0.37%, the S&P 500 rose by 0.23%, and the NASDAQ ended the day higher by 0.07%.
  • However, the Hang Seng Index dropped by -0.40%, while the FTSE 100 experienced a 0.90% increase in today's trading session.
