Market Alert : Crude Oil Prices Decline on Easing Geopolitical Risk and Emerging Supply Expectations

ASX 200 Closed Higher By 1.72%; Buoyed By IT and A-REIT Sectors

By the end of the trading session on 18 October 2022, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 1.72% and settled at 6,779.20. Out of 11 sectors, 10 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200.



The Information Technology and A-REIT sectors were the top 2 gaining sectors, gained 4.19% and 3.08% in their index values. On the other hand, Energy sector was the only declining sector, declined by 0.60% in its index value.



Novonix Limited (ASX: NVX) and Hub24 Limited (ASX: HUB) were the top gainers, with 18.994% and 14.175% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, St Barbara Limited (ASX: SBM) and Adbri Limited (ASX: ABC) were the top losers, with a 21.642% and 4.530% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • Hub24 Limited’s share price gained as the company has reported $3 billion in net inflows for the first quarter of FY23.

  • St Barbara Limited's share price declined following the gold producer cut guidance and deferred capital expenditure on major projects by 12 months after a weak first quarter.

  • UK's new finance minister Jeremy Hunt scrapped Prime Minister Liz Truss's economic plan and scaled back her huge energy support scheme on Monday, making a historic policy U-turn to try to stem a dramatic loss of investor confidence.

  • The Reserve Bank of Australia expects to raise interest rates further over the coming months, and its deputy governor said on Tuesday that the bank could achieve a similar rise in rates to its global peers through smaller hikes.

  • Dow has closed up by 1.9%, S&P 500 up by 2.6%, and NASDAQ closed higher by 3.4%.

  • Hang Seng is up by 1.27%, and FTSE 100 is up by 0.90%.
