Market Alert : Ongoing Middle East Tensions Shake Investor Sentiment Globally

ASX/200 Closed higher by 1.06%; Lifted by A-REIT

By the end of the trading session on 31 January 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 1.06% and settled at 7,680.70. All 11 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200.



A-REIT and Utilities sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.98% and 1.70% respectively in their index values.



Nickel Industries Limited (ASX: NIC) and The Star Entertainment Group Limited (ASX: SGR) were the top gainers, with 9.655% and 5.660% growth in share prices, respectively. Weebit Nano Limited (ASX: WBT) and Incitec Pivot Limited (ASX: IPL) were the top losers, with 9.845% and 7.877% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:




  • Nickel Industries demonstrated strong performance on the benchmark for the second consecutive day, witnessing a remarkable 9.7% increase to reach 79¢.

  • Champion Iron's results for the December quarter received a boost from both record production and elevated iron ore prices. Consequently, its shares experienced a 4.8% surge, reaching $8.53.

  • Credit Corp faced a setback with a 2.6% decline, closing at $17.21. The Australian debt collection giant reported being on track for the lower end of its profit guidance, following a net loss in the most recent half-year.

  • The oil market is poised for its initial monthly gain since September, driven by an uptick in attacks on ships in the Red Sea. This surge prompted a diversion of tanker traffic, instigating concerns about a broader conflict in the Middle East.

  • In the stock market, the Dow concluded with a 0.35% increase, while the S&P 500 experienced a marginal 0.06% dip, and the NASDAQ recorded a 0.76% decrease.

  • The Hang Seng index saw a decline of -1.15%, while the FTSE 100 exhibited positive movement, gaining 0.44% on the given day.
