Market Alert : Ongoing Middle East Tensions Shake Investor Sentiment Globally

ASX/200 Closed lower by 0.10%; Dragged down by Utilities

By the end of the trading session on 12 January 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.10% and settled at 7,498.30. Out 11 sectors, 09 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.



Utilities and Consumer Staples sectors were the top-losing sectors, losing 1.61% and 1.28% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Energy and Materials were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 0.52% and 0.05% respectively in their index values.



Core Lithium Limited (ASX: CXO) and Boss Energy Limited (ASX: BOE) were the top gainers, with 7.692% and 4.948% growth in share prices, respectively. Healius Limited (ASX: HLS) and The Star Entertainment Limited (ASX: SGR) were the top losers, with 7.595% and 4.588% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:




  • Core Lithium, a heavily shorted stock, demonstrated strong performance on the ASX 200, surging by 7.7% to reach 21¢. This positive movement followed a 17% decline earlier in the week.

  • Healius, on the other hand, experienced a significant drop, falling by 7.6% to $1.46. The decline came after Morgan Stanley downgraded the shares to an underweight rating.

  • Syrah Resources, a graphite producer, saw a modest increase of 1.9%, reaching 53.5¢. The company reported potential hindrances to the ramp-up of its US project due to cold weather expected in Louisiana next week.

  • The Australian sharemarket managed to recover from some of its initial losses, driven in part by a surge in oil prices that boosted energy stocks.

  • In the global market, the Dow closed with a marginal increase of 0.04%, the S&P 500 experienced a slight decrease of 0.07%, and the NASDAQ concluded with no significant change.

  • The Hang Seng index exhibited a modest rise of 0.05%, while the FTSE 100 faced a decline of -0.98% on the current trading day.
