Market Alert : Ongoing Middle East Tensions Shake Investor Sentiment Globally

ASX/200 Closed lower by 0.95%; dragged down by Materials

By the end of the trading session on 05 February 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.95% and settled at 7,625.90. Out of 11 sectors, 10 closed lower along with the ASX 200.



Materials and Utilities sectors were the top-losing sectors, losing 2.63% and 1.41% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, the Healthcare sector was the top-gaining sector, gaining 0.13% respectively in their index values.



John Lyng Group Limited (ASX: JLG) and Pro Medicus Limited (ASX: PME) were the top gainers, with 5.473% and 3.654% growth in share prices, respectively. Silver Lake Resources Limited (ASX: SLR) and Liontown Limited (ASX: LTR) were the top losers, with 11.463% and 8.206% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:




  • Silver Lake, a gold miner, experienced an 11.5% decline to $1.12 following the announcement of its merger with Red 5. Conversely, Red 5 saw a 3% surge, reaching 34¢.

  • Appen shares witnessed a 5.4% drop to 26.5¢, hitting a record intraday low of 26¢. The decline followed the struggling data services company's announcement of replacing current CEO Armughan Ahmad with Chief Operating Officer Ryan Kolln.

  • Argo Investments recorded a 0.6% slip to $9.05, attributing the lower profit in the first half-year to reduced dividends from mining giants BHP and Rio Tinto.

  • Oil prices experienced an increase on Monday due to disruption fears arising from weekend airstrikes by the US and Britain in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. The strikes targeted Iran-linked entities in response to a deadly attack on American troops.

  • The Dow closed up by 0.35%, the S&P 500 showed a 1.07% increase, and the NASDAQ concluded higher with a 1.74% gain.

  • The Hang Seng exhibited a 0.26% increase, while the FTSE 100 registered a -0.09% decline for the day.
