ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.16%, Lifted by Industrials

By the end of the trading session on 08 May 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.16% and settled at 8,191.70. Out of the 11 sectors, 07 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Industrials and Utilities are the top-gaining sector, gaining 1.71% and 1.64% in their index value. On the other hand, Financial and Consumer Disvcretionary are the top-losing sector, losing 0.57% and 0.23% in their index value.

Polynovo Limited (ASX: PNV) and Generation Development Group Limited (ASX: GDG) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 11.450% and 8.755% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Light & Wonder Inc. (ASX: LNW) and Westpac Banking Corporation (ASX: WBC) are the top-losing stocks, losing 8.432% and 4.058% in their stock prices.

  • Orica surged 8.4% after reporting a 40% rise in net profit to $250.8 million, excluding significant items, and announcing an increase in its dividend.
  • Light & Wonder dropped 6.3% after informing investors of anticipated short-term cost challenges driven by White House trade policies, although it maintained its full-year earnings forecast.
  • Guzman y Gomez, the Mexican fast-food chain, rose 3.5%, recovering from an earlier dip. The company told investors at the Macquarie conference that it expects to surpass its full-year net profit forecast.
  • Oil prices declined after US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell indicated there was no urgency to adjust interest rates, coupled with ongoing US-China tensions ahead of trade talks.
  • Wall Street closed with minor losses: The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 0.70%, the S&P 500 rose by 0.43%, and the NASDAQ edged up by 0.27%.
  • Global Markets Update: The Hang Seng Index advanced by 0.63%, while the FTSE 100 slipped by 0.44%.
