AMP Shares Weaken as ASX Buyback Progress Raises Questions Over What Comes Next

AMP Shares Weaken as ASX Buyback Progress Raises Questions Over What Comes Next Source: Kapitales Research

Highlights

  • AMP repurchased 4,472,790 ordinary shares for approximately AU$10.45 million in its latest disclosed session.
  • The buyback provides for expenditure of up to AU$150 million.
  • Management retains flexibility over further purchases through the proposed April 2027 completion date.

AMP Limited (ASX: AMP) shares traded at a current market price (CMP) of AU$2.185, representing a decline of nearly 7%. The company’s announcement on 3 November 2026 confirmed another round of share repurchases, with the stock trading below the prices paid during its latest disclosed buying session.

Fresh Purchases Extend Buyback

AMP spent AU$10,447,985.69 acquiring 4,472,790 fully paid ordinary shares on 2 November 2026. Individual purchases were completed at prices between AU$2.220 and AU$2.510.

The notification recorded AU$2.6003 as the highest price the company could pay that day under ASX Listing Rule 7.33. Its supplied CMP was lower than the session’s minimum repurchase price, illustrating the gap between recent transaction prices and the subsequent market quotation.

Earlier Transactions Establish Progress

Before the latest session, AMP had purchased 40,036,274 shares at a total cost of AU$98,480,245.79.

For those earlier purchases, the highest price paid was AU$2.660, recorded on 25 September 2026. The lowest was AU$2.320, paid on 16 October 2026.

The filing documents repurchase activity without identifying a reason for the share-price decline. It also contains no new earnings forecast or operating update.

Management Maintains Purchase Flexibility

AMP intends to allocate up to AU$150 million to its on-market buyback. Following the initial notification on 6 August 2026, the proposed programme extends from 20 August 2026 until 30 April 2027.

UBS Securities Australia Ltd manages purchases on AMP’s behalf, with transactions settled in Australian dollars. The relevant share class comprised 2,432,792,139 ordinary shares, according to the filing.

No minimum or maximum share quantity has been set. The programme does not require securityholder approval, while future purchase prices remain unspecified.

Outlook

AMP’s remaining buyback activity will reflect management’s judgement about suitable timing and circumstances. The stated spending limit allows further purchases but does not assure that the full amount will be used. Upcoming disclosures should clarify execution pace and transaction prices, providing a clearer picture of how the programme develops following the latest share-price weakness.
