Gold and Silver Prices Rebound as Falling Oil Eases Inflation and Rate Concerns

Highlights:

  • Gold rebounds towards US$3,960 as declining oil prices revive interest in precious metals.
  • Silver recovers above US$50, but steep monthly losses raise questions about sustained momentum.
  • US-Iran diplomatic optimism eases inflation fears, shifting attention towards Federal Reserve policy.

Gold and Silver Recover After Sharp Sell-Off

Gold and silver prices regained ground, supported by falling crude oil prices and improving expectations surrounding US-Iran diplomatic negotiations. The recovery followed substantial losses in precious metals as investors reassessed inflation risks and the outlook for US interest rates.

Gold advanced as much as 2.5% during Monday's session, recovering from Friday's low of US$3,870.27. Spot gold subsequently traded around US$3,958.27 per ounce, reflecting a daily gain of 0.28%. Silver also strengthened, recovering towards US$50.80 before trading near US$50.76 per ounce. Despite the rebound, both metals remained under pressure following recent market volatility.

Precious Metals Show Mixed Performance

Latest market figures highlight the contrast between short-term recovery and broader weakness:

  • Gold: US$3,958.27 per ounce, up 0.28% daily but down 4.44% monthly.
  • Silver: US$50.764 per ounce, gaining 0.22% daily despite a 16.85% monthly decline.
  • Annual performance: Gold remained 0.60% higher, while silver retained a 7.64% gain.

Oil Decline Reshapes Inflation Expectations

Renewed diplomatic efforts involving Iran encouraged expectations of reduced Middle Eastern supply disruptions, contributing to falling crude prices. Lower energy costs could moderate inflationary pressures and reduce expectations of prolonged monetary tightening. This development supports non-yielding precious metals by potentially lowering the opportunity cost of holding them. Meanwhile, stabilisation across technology shares helped ease liquidity pressures following Friday's sharp sell-off.

Outlook: Can Precious Metals Sustain Their Recovery?

Movements in gold and silver prices are likely to remain influenced by shifts in US monetary policy expectations, Treasury bond yields and evolving global geopolitical tensions. Investors will closely monitor the 3 November US midterm elections, upcoming economic indicators and diplomatic negotiations involving Iran.

Although softer oil prices provide near-term support, persistent inflation and elevated interest rates could restrict further gains. A sustained recovery will likely depend on improving monetary policy expectations and renewed investor demand.
