Highlights:

  • BHP shares trade at AU$59.230 as copper production drops 19% to 400,700 tonnes.
  • Iron ore output grows 4% to 66.5 million tonnes, highlighting operational resilience.
  • Copper prices rise 53%, while major development projects could reshape BHP's growth outlook.

BHP Shares Slip Following Latest Operational Update

BHP Group Limited (ASX: BHP) shares fell nearly 2% to AU$59.230 as investors evaluated the company's September 2026 quarterly operational performance. In its announcement dated 20 October 2026, the mining heavyweight revealed contrasting trends across its major commodities. While copper operations encountered production difficulties, stronger iron ore and coal volumes provided some stability. The company retained its annual production forecasts despite these challenges.

Copper Output Struggles as Prices Strengthen

Copper production reached 400,700 tonnes, representing a 19% year-on-year contraction. Lower ore grades, scheduled maintenance, adverse weather conditions and equipment disruptions affected operations.

Escondida delivered 252,600 tonnes, down 23%, while Spence produced 47,400 tonnes, falling 15%. Copper South Australia recorded 60,700 tonnes, a 16% decrease.

Nevertheless, copper realised prices climbed 53% to US$7.01 per pound. BHP maintained its FY27 copper production target of 1.65–1.80 million tonnes.

Iron Ore and Coal Provide Operational Support

BHP's iron ore production expanded 4% to 66.5 million tonnes, supported by 64.3 million tonnes from Western Australian operations.

Steelmaking coal volumes increased 1% to 4.9 million tonnes, while energy coal production advanced 26% to 4.4 million tonnes.

Commodity pricing showed mixed movements. Iron ore realised prices slipped 9% to US$76.27 per wet metric tonne, whereas steelmaking coal prices strengthened 34% to US$242.82 per tonne.

Strategic Investments Create Future Opportunities

BHP approved US$800 million in pre-commitment funding to advance Escondida's New Concentrator development.

Meanwhile, its Jansen Stage 1 potash project achieved 87% completion, targeting initial production in mid-2027. Estimated expenditure remains US$8.4 billion.

The company also aims to lift Copper South Australia's annual production to approximately 500,000 tonnes by 2035.

Outlook: Investors Await Signs of Recovery

BHP reaffirmed FY27 iron ore guidance of 260–272 million tonnes, reflecting confidence in its operating outlook.

However, copper disruptions, fluctuating commodity prices and development risks remain key concerns. Future production improvements and successful project delivery could influence investor sentiment and BHP's share-price direction.
