Can Elon Musk's SpaceX and Tesla Achieve Ambitious Terafab Chip Production Targets by 2028?

Can Elon Musk's SpaceX and Tesla Achieve Ambitious Terafab Chip Production Targets by 2028? Source: Kapitales Research

Highlights

  • SpaceX targets mass chip production by late 2028, but significant execution challenges remain.
  • Tesla-SpaceX venture aims for one terawatt of annual computing capacity, raising industry expectations.
  • ASML’s accelerated equipment deliveries could support Musk’s ambitious semiconductor manufacturing timeline.

SpaceX and Tesla Accelerate Terafab Semiconductor Plans

Elon Musk has outlined an ambitious manufacturing schedule for Terafab, a semiconductor initiative involving SpaceX and Tesla, targeting large-scale chip production in the third or fourth quarter of 2028.

Speaking during SpaceX’s earnings conference call on 20 October 2026, Musk acknowledged considerable uncertainty surrounding the proposed timeline. The project represents an effort to strengthen both companies’ access to advanced processors as artificial intelligence and robotics applications expand.

Key Production Milestones and Strategic Objectives

Terafab seeks to establish an integrated semiconductor manufacturing operation in Texas, combining advanced chip fabrication, packaging and testing capabilities.

The project’s principal objectives include:

  • Mid-2027: Produce an operational test chip at the Austin research facility, potentially using static random-access memory (SRAM) technology.
  • Q3–Q4 2028: Begin commercial-scale semiconductor manufacturing at the primary Gibbons Creek facility.
  • Long-term ambition: Build the capability to manufacture chips each year that collectively deliver one terawatt of AI computing power.

Achieving these milestones could give both companies greater control over critical hardware requirements while supporting future technological expansion.

ASML Equipment Deliveries Could Influence Progress

Access to sophisticated manufacturing machinery remains a major challenge for Terafab. Musk indicated that Dutch semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML and other suppliers were accelerating deliveries to support the project’s demanding schedule. However, questions remain over the procurement of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems, which are essential for manufacturing leading-edge processors. Intel has also indicated involvement in the initiative, while potential cooperation with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has been discussed.

Outlook: Can Terafab Transform Semiconductor Manufacturing?

Terafab could eventually strengthen the semiconductor independence of SpaceX and Tesla while expanding manufacturing capacity for AI-driven technologies. Nevertheless, substantial capital requirements, equipment availability and complex production processes present significant execution risks.

Investors will likely monitor the planned 2027 test-chip milestone as an early indication of technical progress. Successful implementation could reshape semiconductor supply arrangements, although the ambitious 2028 production target remains uncertain.
