Lithium Prices Crash to 10-Month Low: Will ASX Lithium Stocks Face Further Selling Pressure?

Lithium Prices Crash to 10-Month Low: Will ASX Lithium Stocks Face Further Selling Pressure? Source: Kapitales Research

Highlights:

  • Chinese lithium futures plunge nearly 12%, raising fresh concerns over the battery metal's recovery.
  • European import restrictions threaten lithium demand as rising inventories deepen market uncertainty.
  • ASX lithium stocks retreat sharply, leaving investors watching for signs of stabilisation.

Lithium Prices Slide Amid Global Demand Concerns

Lithium prices experienced significant selling pressure, as weakening demand expectations and concerns about excess supply unsettled global battery-metal markets. Chinese lithium carbonate futures dropped to their lowest levels in nearly ten months, creating fresh uncertainty for Australian lithium producers.

The most actively traded lithium carbonate contract on the Guangzhou Futures Exchange declined 11.8% to CNY 104,740 per tonne, after touching CNY 104,680 during trading. The decline marked its sharpest daily fall since March 2026.

Meanwhile, spot lithium carbonate prices reached approximately CNY 115,400 per tonne, representing a daily decline of 5.68%. The commodity also recorded a monthly decrease of 16.77%, although its annual performance remained positive at 57.87%.

European Trade Agreement Raises Fresh Demand Risks

A newly negotiated agreement between China and the European Union has intensified concerns about lithium consumption. Under the arrangement, annual imports of Chinese hybrid vehicles into Europe are expected to face a cap of approximately 350,000 units in 2027, compared with projected shipments of around 800,000 vehicles in 2026. The restrictions could slow battery demand growth, potentially affecting lithium procurement across the supply chain.

Rising Supply Adds Pressure

Supply-side developments are creating additional challenges for lithium markets.

Key developments include:

  • Inventory Revisions: Updated industry calculations indicated approximately 175,000 tonnes of Chinese lithium inventories, substantially exceeding earlier estimates.
  • Australian Production: Mineral Resources resumed operations at its Bald Hill lithium mine in May 2026 after approximately 18 months of inactivity, with concentrate production recommencing in June.
  • Additional Supply: Core Lithium resumed its Finniss project, strengthening expectations of increased production availability.

These developments have reinforced concerns that lithium supply could outpace near-term consumption.

ASX Lithium Stocks Face Selling Pressure

Australian lithium-related stocks declined as weakening commodity prices weighed on investor sentiment.

  • PLS Group Limited (ASX: PLS): Shares traded around AU$3.220, recording a decline of approximately 4.45%.
  • Mineral Resources Limited (ASX: MIN): Shares traded near AU$47.560, reflecting a decline of approximately 3.10%.
  • Liontown Limited (ASX: LTR): Shares stood around AU$0.742, representing a decline of approximately 1.00%.
  • Elevra Lithium Limited (ASX: ELV): Shares traded near AU$4.440, registering a decline of approximately 2.63%.

The widespread declines highlight the sector's sensitivity to changes in lithium pricing expectations.

Outlook: Can Lithium Markets Stabilise?

Lithium markets could remain volatile as investors assess European trade restrictions, Chinese inventories and expanding production capacity.

Although long-term battery demand offers potential support, near-term pricing may remain vulnerable without stronger consumption growth. For Australian lithium producers, operating costs, production discipline and financial resilience could become increasingly important as the market searches for a sustainable recovery.
