Rare Earth Stocks Slide Despite Rising Prices as Global Supply Shortages Deepen

Rare Earth Stocks Slide Despite Rising Prices as Global Supply Shortages Deepen Source: Kapitales Research

Highlights:

  • Rare earth prices strengthen, yet mining stocks decline sharply, exposing a widening market disconnect.
  • Western supply shortages drive extraordinary price premiums, raising questions about their sustainability.
  • Rising magnet demand and government support could reshape rare earth investment prospects.

Rare Earth Prices Rise While Mining Shares Struggle

Global rare earth markets are experiencing an unusual divergence as strengthening commodity prices fail to translate into higher mining stock valuations. According to Canaccord's analysis reported on 21 October 2026, rare earth prices outside China have increased significantly, while shares of several major producers and developers have declined.

Neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) prices outside China have advanced approximately 23% year-to-date, exceeding US$110 per kilogram. However, rare earth producers covered by Canaccord have fallen an average of 28%, while developers have declined approximately 17%.

China's Supply Dominance Drives Western Price Premiums

China's continued control over rare earth processing and exports has intensified supply concerns across Western markets.

Significant regional price differences highlight these constraints:

  • Dysprosium trades near US$1,074 per kilogram in Rotterdam, compared with US$227 in China.
  • Terbium reaches approximately US$4,594 per kilogram outside China, against US$983 domestically.
  • Western samarium prices reportedly exceed Chinese quotations by approximately 346 times.

Nevertheless, analysts suggest that these substantial price differences could narrow as supply networks evolve and industries increasingly adopt substitute materials.

Growing Demand Strengthens Long-Term Market Fundamentals

Canaccord expects demand for neodymium-iron-boron magnets to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 7.3%, reaching approximately 365,000 tonnes by 2035. Electric vehicles, industrial automation, robotics, drones and data centres are expected to support consumption growth. Meanwhile, global NdPr supply could face a deficit of approximately 10% by 2035, reinforcing concerns about future availability.

Outlook: Can Rare Earth Equities Recover?

Despite supportive commodity fundamentals, higher financing costs, substantial project expenditure and broader market uncertainty continue to pressure mining valuations. Canaccord estimates that covered producers trade at approximately 0.57 times their net asset value, suggesting a substantial valuation discount.

Looking ahead, government-backed pricing arrangements, expanding Western processing capacity and stronger industrial demand could improve sector sentiment. Nevertheless, project execution risks and potentially unsustainable price premiums remain important considerations. Sustained profitability and reliable production growth will likely determine whether rare earth equities recover.
