Highlights:
TSMC delivers another record quarterly profit, reinforcing the strength of global AI chip demand.
Advanced semiconductor production accelerates, but mounting investment requirements present a crucial challenge.
Stronger revenue forecasts signal sustained AI momentum despite renewed uncertainty across technology stocks.
TSMC Reports Record Third-Quarter Earnings
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited, the world's leading contract chipmaker, announced its third-quarter financial results on 15 October 2026, delivering another record profit as demand for artificial intelligence (AI) processors continued to strengthen. The company reported robust revenue growth and expanding profitability, highlighting its central role in supplying advanced semiconductors to major global technology companies.
For the quarter ended 30 September 2026, TSMC generated revenue of NT$1.49 trillion (US$46.72 billion), representing a 50.9% increase compared to the corresponding period in 2025. Net profit climbed 68.7% to NT$763.06 billion, while diluted earnings per share reached NT$29.43.
TSMC's earnings performance reflected continued adoption of sophisticated manufacturing technologies, particularly those supporting AI accelerators, high-performance computing and next-generation processors.
Operating margin: Stood at 58.7%, demonstrating strong earnings generation.
Advanced semiconductor technologies: Manufacturing processes at 7 nanometres or smaller accounted for 79% of TSMC’s overall wafer revenue.
Next-generation production: The 2-nanometre process accounted for 8% of wafer revenue, highlighting its growing commercial contribution.
The increasing importance of advanced manufacturing reinforces TSMC's competitive position as technology companies pursue greater processing capabilities and energy efficiency.
AI Investment Boom Supports Stronger Revenue Guidance
Looking ahead, TSMC projected fourth-quarter revenue between US$52.3 billion and US$54.3 billion, indicating further sequential expansion. The company expects gross margins between 65.0% and 67.0%, alongside operating margins ranging from 56.5% to 58.5%.
Management also maintained its 2026 capital expenditure outlook of US$60 billion to US$64 billion, reflecting substantial commitments to expanding production capacity and supporting advanced semiconductor technologies.
However, the company's strong earnings arrived amid broader semiconductor market weakness, suggesting investors remain concerned about elevated AI infrastructure spending and the sustainability of technology-sector valuations.
Outlook: AI Demand Strengthens Long-Term Growth Prospects
TSMC's record earnings and encouraging revenue guidance underscore the continuing importance of AI infrastructure investment to semiconductor industry growth. Expanding demand for advanced processors could support manufacturing volumes, technological development and future profitability.
Nevertheless, significant capital requirements, geopolitical uncertainty and potential fluctuations in technology spending remain important risks. TSMC's long-term growth prospects will depend on its capacity to increase manufacturing output, maintain profitability and respond effectively to evolving investment trends across the global AI industry.
