Sesuvium Seaweed Confirmed as Hyperaccumulator for Gold, Lithium, and Other Key Metals.

BPH Global Ltd (ASX: BP8) has announced the successful completion of its initial R&D program confirming that Sesuvium portulacastrum is a hyperaccumulator of high-value metals like gold, silver, copper, and lithium, with concentrations reaching up to 81.32 milligrams per kilogram of dry biomass. The results indicate that metal uptake is significantly higher when the seaweed is grown in polluted or brackish waters compared to clean environments.

Although traditional chemical extraction methods were ineffective due to the complex multi-metal profile, the seaweed biomass has now been classified as “bio-ore.” The company is negotiating a new six-month R&D program with Temasek Polytechnic, focusing on microbial-assisted metal extraction. The resilient nature and broad environmental adaptability of Sesuvium make it a strong candidate for scalable deployment across mineral-rich coastal waters, particularly in Southeast Asia. Future efforts will explore biological pathways for metal recovery and commercial applications of the “bio-ore” solution.
