Variscan Receives Key Permitting Approval to Advance San Jose Mine Restart in Spain.
Variscan Mines Limited (ASX: VAR) has secured a major regulatory milestone with approval of its Preliminary Mining Plan (Anteproyecto) for the San Jose Mine Restart at the Novales-Udias Project in northern Spain. Granted by the Government of Cantabria, the approval authorises all pre-works, site and underground development activities required to enable a mine restart, as well as underground trial mining and small-scale exploitation. This approval builds on previously granted mining licences, restoration approvals and annual work plans, significantly de-risking the pathway to production. Early works will focus on adapting existing infrastructure to minimise capital expenditure, including mine access, haulage, power, drainage and safety systems. Importantly, permitting activities can now progress in parallel with remaining approvals, including the Environmental Impact Assessment, supporting timeline certainty. The approval reinforces Variscan’s Explorer-Producer strategy and positions the Company to progress toward near-term zinc production, supported by strong government engagement and a past-producing asset with established infrastructure.
