Market Alert : Ongoing Middle East Tensions Shake Investor Sentiment Globally

ASX 200 ended marginally up; Miners were the top gainers

By the end of the trading session on 23 May 2022, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.05% and settled at 7148.90. 7 out of 11 sectors closed lower despite the gain in the ASX 200. The Materials and Information Technology sectors were the top 2 gaining sectors, gained 0.84% and 0.43% in their index value. On the other hand, the Utilities and Financials sectors were the top 2 losing sectors, declined 0.88% and 0.40% in their index values.

Australian sectors traded mixed today as investors are worried about the consequences of rising cases in Beijing, China. Beijing has reported a record number of COVID-19 cases after a strict lockdown, which is again a concern about a lockdown. China’s strict COVID-zero policy has restrained the economic growth and encouraged Chinese banks last week to cut borrowing rates for long-term loans by a record amount.

Codan Limited (ASX: CDA) and Imugene Limited (ASX: IMU) were the top gainers with 14.518% and 12.500% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Polynovo Limited (ASX: PNV) and Novonix Limited (ASX: NVX) were the top losers, with a 7.548% and 4.380% drop in the share price, respectively.
