ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.22%, Lifted by Consumer Discretionary

By the end of the trading session on 15 May 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.22% and settled at 8,297.50. Out of the 11 sectors, 05 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Consumer Discretionary  and Information Technology are the top-gaining sector, gaining 1.67% and 1.35% in their index value. On the other hand, Materials and A-REIT are the top-losing sector, losing 1.12% and 0.53% in their index value.

Graincorp Limited (ASX: GNC) and Insurance Australia Group Limited (ASX: IAG) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 7.552% and 4.750% in their stock prices. On the other hand, NRW Holdings Limited (ASX: NWH) and Treasury Wine Estates Limited (ASX: TWE) are the top-losing stocks, losing 9.138% and 5.154% in their stock prices.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • NRW Holdings' shares declined by 8.3% to $2.66 after the company raised concerns that the South Australian government's move to simplify the sale process for the Whyalla steelworks could significantly impact the recovery of more than $100 million owed to it.
  • Treasury Wine Estates saw its stock fall by 5.2% to $8.65 following the news that its CEO, Tim Ford, will be stepping down later this year after a five-year tenure. He is set to be succeeded by Sam Fischer, who currently leads Lion.
  • Mayne Pharma rebounded by 8.2% to $6.20 after experiencing a sharp decline of over 15% on Wednesday. The recovery came after Deloitte-backed US pharmaceutical company Cosette submitted a $672 million acquisition proposal for the business.
  • Insurance Australia Group's shares climbed 5.7% to $8.90 after the company announced its intention to purchase the insurance arm of The Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia for $400 million.
  • Graincorp's stock surged 8.8% to $7.78 after the grain and edible oils producer raised its full-year earnings outlook, supported by a strong harvest across the east coast.
  • In the US markets, major indices closed with slight gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.21%, while the S&P 500 edged up by 0.10%, and the NASDAQ gained 0.72%.
  • Meanwhile, in global markets, the Hang Seng Index fell by 0.93%, and the FTSE 100 dipped by 0.21%.
