Market Alert : Crude Oil Prices Decline on Easing Geopolitical Risk and Emerging Supply Expectations

ASX/200 Closed higher by 0.50%, Lifted by A-REIT

By the end of the trading session on 29 February 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.50% and settled at 7,698.70. Out of 11 sectors, 10 closed higher along with the ASX 200.



A-REIT and Consumer Discretionary sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.50% and 1.19% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Utilities sector was the top-losing sector, losing 0.31% respectively in their index values.



Weebit Nano Limited (ASX: WBT) and The Star Entertainment Limited (ASX: SGR) were the top gainers, with 9.596% and 8.333% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Chalice Mining Group Limited (ASX: CHN) and Healius Limited (ASX: HLS) were the top losers, with 10.318% and 5.933% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • Star Entertainment experienced an impressive 8.3% surge in its share price, despite reporting a 14% decline in revenue. The company faces licensing issues in Sydney, yet investors seemed optimistic about its future prospects.

  • Booktopia encountered a significant decline of 8.3% in its share price after the online bookseller reported a widened net loss. Additionally, concerns were raised by its auditor regarding the company's balance sheet and cash flows.

  • Bitcoin reached a historic high of $97,000 on the Melbourne-based exchange BTC Markets. This surge was attributed to concerns about the US fiscal position and increased buying activity from exchange-traded funds.

  • Market indices exhibited mixed performance: the Dow closed down by 0.06%, the S&P 500 declined by 0.17%, and the NASDAQ ended lower by 0.55%.

  • On the international front, the Hang Seng index rose by 0.23%, while the FTSE 100 witnessed a decrease of -0.76% for the day.
