ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.53%, Lifted by Utilities

By the end of the trading session on 14 August 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.53% and settled at 8,873.80. Out of 11 sectors, 08 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Utilities and Financial  are the top-gaining sector, gaining 3.51% and 1.29% in their it’s value. On the other hand, Telecommunications Services and Materials was the top-losing sector, losing 0.93% and 0.45% in it’s value.

Temple & Webster Group Limited (ASX: TPW) and Origin Energy Limited (ASX: ORG) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 8.745% and 6.334% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Liontown Resources Limited (ASX: LTR) and South32 Limited (ASX: S32) are the top-losing stocks, losing 9.091% and 5.229% in their stock prices.

  • ASX Ltd slipped 1.2% to $62.91 after reporting a full-year profit of $510 million, supported by strong performances in its technology, data, and markets divisions.
  • Suncorp shares climbed 3.6% as the insurer posted a 52% increase in net profit to $1.8 billion, boosted by proceeds from the sale of its banking business to ANZ.
  • South32 dropped 5.2% to $2.90 after announcing a $US372 million ($570 million) write-down on its Mozal aluminium smelter in Mozambique, warning the facility may close without a new power supply agreement.
  • Healthcare imaging specialist Pro Medicus gained 6.2% to $18.54 following a 40% rise in net profit to $115.2 million, in line with market expectations.
  • Crude oil prices retreated after US stockpiles unexpectedly increased and the International Energy Agency issued a downbeat market outlook, according to ANZ.
  • On Wall Street, US equities closed mixed — the Dow Jones added 1.04%, the S&P 500 advanced 0.32%, and the NASDAQ Composite edged up 0.14%. 
  • In Asia, the Hang Seng index was down 0.42% in today’s session.
