ASX/200 Closed Higher by 1.13%, Lifted by Industrials

By the end of trading session on 21 August 2025, benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed 1.13% higher at 9,019.10, marking the first time ever it crossed the 9,000 level. All 11 sectors finished in positive territory.

Brambles Limited (ASX: BXB) and Super Retail Group Limited  (ASX: SUL) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 13.215% and 12.341% in their stock prices. On the other hand, IPH Limited (ASX: IPH) and Sonic Helathcare Limited (ASX: SHL) are the top-losing stocks, losing 19.500% and 12.840% in their stock prices.

Other Factors influencing the market:

• Downer EDI advanced 5.9% to $7.34 after launching a $230 million share buyback, supported by an 82% surge in profit to $149.1 million.
• Super Retail climbed 12.3% to $18.57 after delivering full-year results that exceeded analyst forecasts.
• IPH slumped 19.5% to $4.50 as a steep decline in US patent filings dented investor confidence.
• Megaport, which had fallen as much as 17% during the session, pared losses to close 3.4% lower at $14.30 as investors reacted to a sharp increase in operating expenses.
• Oil prices edged higher on Thursday, buoyed by signs of strong US demand and persistent uncertainty over attempts to broker peace in Ukraine.
• On international markets, Wall Street ended mixed: the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.04%, the S&P 500 eased 0.24%, and the NASDAQ Composite dropped 0.67%. 
• In Asia and Europe, the Hang Seng fell 0.54%, while the FTSE 100 rose 1.08%.
