S&P/ASX 200 Closed In Red Today; LTR Declined By More Than 30%

By the end of the trading session on 20 October 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 1.16% and settled at 6,900.70. Out of 11 sectors, 10 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

The Energy sector is the only gaining sector, gained 0.16% in its index value. On the other hand, the Materials and Telecommunication Services sectors were the top 2 declining sectors, declined by 1.69% and 1.43% in their index values.

Weebit Nano Limited (ASX: WBT) and Paladin Energy Limited (ASX: PDN) were the top gainers, with 13.253% and 3.174% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Liontown Resources Limited (ASX: LTR) and Insignia Financial Group (ASX: IFL) were the top losers, with a 31.900% and 12.821% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • The Australian share market closed lower, as investors worry about conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, with the interest rate on US 10-year government bonds briefly topping 5%.
  • Gold prices also climbed over the trading day to fetch US$1990 an ounce and set an Australian gold price record high of AU$3150 an ounce.
  • Liontown Resources Limited’s shares crashed after it raised AU$365 million from institutional investors at AU$1.80 per share to fund the development of its Kathleen Valley Project.
  • Insignia Financial Group’s shares declined today after the company’s chief executive, Renato Mota going to leave the business in February.
  • Oil prices rose sharply in Asian trade, extending a strong run of gains after the U.S. government outlined plans to begin refiling the country’s strategic oil reserve. At the same time, concerns over supply disruptions in the Middle East also lent support.
  • The Dow has closed down by 0.75%, the S&P 500 down by 0.85%, and the NASDAQ ended lower by 0.96%.
  • Hang Seng is down by 0.93%, and FTSE 100 is down by 0.66%.
