ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.81%, Dragged down by Energy

By the end of trading session on 17 October 2025, benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed 0.81% lower at 8,995.30. Out of 11 sectors, 08 sectors ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Consumer Staples and Utilities were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 0.33% and 0.07% in their values. On the other hand, Energy and Information Technology were the top-losing sectors, losing 2.80% and 1.91% in their values.

Emerald Resources NL (ASX: EMR) and Treasury Wine Estates Limited (ASX: TWE) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 4.119% and 3.668% in their stock prices. On the other hand, QBE Insurance Group Limited (ASX: QBE) and Droneshield Limited (ASX: DRO) are the top-losing stocks, losing 9.252% and 8.016% in their stock prices.

  • Iress Limited (ASX: IRE) emerged as one of the standout performers, rising 3.9% at the time of writing, after confirming it is in talks with new third-party bidders, adding to the growing list of companies that have already shown acquisition interest in the stockbroking platform.
  • NexGen Energy Ltd. (TSX/ASX: NXG), a dual-listed uranium producer, slipped 5.4% following the announcement of a C$950 million (US$1 billion) global equity raise aimed at funding its Rook 1 uranium project in Canada.
  • In commodities, physical gold demand across major Asian economies remained robust, even as spot prices hit multiple record highs. In India, gold premiums climbed to their highest levels in over a decade, driven by festive-season buying ahead of Dhanteras and Diwali.
  • Crude oil prices slipped in early Friday trading, setting up for a weekly loss, as traders assessed geopolitical uncertainty following the announcement that U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Hungary to discuss potential resolutions to the Ukraine conflict.
  • Across global markets, equities delivered a mixed performance. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.65%, the S&P 500 dropped 0.63%, and the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.47%. 
  • In regional trade, the Hang Seng Index was down 2.51%, while the FTSE 100 slipped 1.44%.
