ASX 200 Ended Lower By 0.80%; 10 Out Of 11 Sectors Closed In Red
By the end of the trading session on 07 October 2022, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.80% and settled at 6,762.80. Out of 11 sectors, 10 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.
The Energy sector was the only gaining sector, gained 0.95% in its index value. On the other hand, A-REIT and Information Technology were the top 2 declining sectors, declined by 2.01% and 1.77% in their index values.
Karoon Energy Ltd (ASX: KAR) and Whitehaven Coal Limited (ASX: WHC) were the top gainers, with 9.718% and 4.780% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Iluka Resources Limited (ASX: ILU) and Megaport Limited (ASX: MP1) were the top losers, with a 6.326% and 4.822% drop in share prices, respectively.
S&P/ASX 200 declined today, tracked a drop on Wall Street after U.S. Federal Reserve officials sounded unequivocally committed to rate rises and tip the economy into recession.
Australian share market gained 4.5% this week as the energy sector rallied after the OPEC+ group of major oil producers announced significant output cuts, sending oil prices sharply higher.
Karoon Energy rose 9.1% following the Brazilian government oil and gas regulator agreed to a reduction in the royalty rate in the Bauna project.
Allkem Limited’s share price gained after the International Finance Corporation agreed to lend $US200 million to finance a battery-grade lithium carbonate project in Argentina.
New Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook on Thursday said that U.S. inflation remains stubbornly and unacceptably high. The data over the past couple of months show that inflationary pressures remain broad-based. Thus, requiring further policy tightening to be sure it begins falling.
The oil sector has extended its gains after OPEC, and its allies agreed to cut production by 2 million barrels per day to support prices.
Dow has closed down by 1.0%, S&P 500 down by 0.7%, and NASDAQ closed lower by 0.4%.
Hang Seng is down by 1.36%, and FTSE 100 is down by 0.78%.
