ASX/200 Closed higher by 0.11%, Lifted by Information Technology
By the end of the trading session on 12 March 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.11% and settled at 7,712.50. Out of 11 sectors, 05 closed lower along with the ASX 200.
Information Technology and Utilities were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.03% and 0.89% respectively in their index values. Energy and Industrials were the top-losing sectors, losing 0.97% and 0.39% respectively in their index values.
Bellevue Gold Limited (ASX: BGL) and Strike Energy Limited (ASX: STX) were the top gainers, with 10.309% and 9.523% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Coronado Global Limited (ASX: CRN) and Whitehaven Coal Limited (ASX: WHC) were the top losers, with 3.907% and 3.552% drop in share prices, respectively.
Pilbara Minerals increased by 4.3% to $4.17 after securing a new offtake agreement with Sichuan Yahua Industrial Group.
Bellevue Gold experienced the highest growth on the ASX 200, rising by 10.3% to $1.605 following a production update.
Southern Cross Gold surged by 20.2% to $2.05 due to its intentions to list on a Canadian stock exchange.
Alumina saw a significant jump of over 8% to $1.275 after Alcoa, a US aluminium giant, finalized its $3.3 billion all-stock bid.
The Australian dollar remained stable at US66.15¢ despite a sharp correction in the iron ore price, which typically impacts Australia's export earnings significantly.
The Dow closed with a slight increase of 0.12%, while the S&P 500 and NASDAQ experienced marginal decreases of 0.11% and 0.41% respectively.
The Hang Seng index rose by 2.18%, and the FTSE 100 saw a minor increase of 0.12% during the trading day.
