Market Alert : Crude Oil Prices Decline on Easing Geopolitical Risk and Emerging Supply Expectations

ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.63%, Lifted by Energy

By the end of the trading session on 20 May 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.63% and settled at 7,863.70. Out of 11 sectors, 07 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200.



Energy and Materials sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 2.20% and 2.06% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Healthcare and A-REIT sectors were the top-lossing sector, lossing 0.68% and 0.62% respectively in their index values.  



The Star Entertainment Limited (ASX: SGR) and Paladin Energy Limited (ASX: PDN) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 20.000% and 7.569% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Audinate Group Limited (ASX: AD8) and Cochlear Limited (ASX: COH) are the top-losing stocks and are declining by 5.856% and 3.233% in their stock prices.

Other Factors influencing the market:




  • Star Entertainment surged by 20% to 54¢, becoming the top performer on the benchmark index. This rise followed confirmation from The Australian Financial Review regarding discussions of potential control acquisition by Florida-based entertainment giant Hard Rock Hotels and Casinos.

  • Intelligence software company Nuix reported a strong six-month performance, surpassing its revenue growth targets. This announcement led to a significant rally in shares, soaring by 25.2% to $2.98.

  • Core Lithium announced the appointment of Paul Brown, former Mineral Resources executive and current CEO of Hastings Technology Metals, as its new chief executive. Despite this development, shares closed 6.1% lower at 15.5¢.

  • Gold reached a new high, driven by heightened investor demand across the broader metals complex amidst growing optimism regarding potential rate cuts by the US this year.

  • The Dow experienced a 0.34% increase in closure, while the S&P 500 edged up by 0.12%. Conversely, the NASDAQ ended the day with a slight decrease of 0.07%.

  • The Hang Seng index rose by 0.63%, while the FTSE 100 witnessed a marginal decline of -0.22% during the trading session.
