ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.01%, Dragged down by Utilities

By the end of the trading session on 24 April 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.01% and settled at 7,683.00. Out of 11 sectors, 08 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.



Financial and Consumer Staples sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 0.35% and 0.29% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Utilities and Industrials sectors were the top-losing sectors, losing 0.59% and 0.55% respectively in their index values.



Regis Resources Limited (ASX: RRL) and Fisher and Paykel Limited (ASX: FPH) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 4.761% and 4.474% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Cleanaway Waste Management Limited (ASX: CWY) and Strike Energy Limited (ASX: CTX) are the top-losing stocks and are declining by 9.967% and 4.762% in their stock prices.

  • Perpetual's share price fell 3.5% to $23.83, making it one of the poorest performers on the ASX 200 after reporting $5.2 billion in net outflows during the March quarter.



  • Cleanaway Waste Management's shares dropped 11% to $2.71 following the company's denial of rumors that it was approached by Seven Group, despite an earlier 15.8% rise to $3.01 on Tuesday.

  • Nick Scali is set to purchase UK-based Anglia Home Furnishings, known as Fabb Furniture. Reports by the Australian Financial Review indicated that the transaction would involve a nominal amount of £2 million ($3.82 million).

  • The Australian dollar increased by 0.5% to US65.21¢, recovering from a five-month low of US63.60¢, which occurred last week amid escalating conflicts in the Middle East.

  • In today's stock market, the Dow Jones grew by 0.67%, the S&P 500 by 0.87%, and the NASDAQ by 1.11%. 

  • Additionally, the Hang Seng rose by 2.03%, and the FTSE 100 increased by 0.26%.
