Market Alert : Ongoing Middle East Tensions Shake Investor Sentiment Globally

ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.09%, Dragged down by Energy

By the end of the trading session on 17 April 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.09% and settled at 7,605.60. Out of 11 sectors, 06 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.



Utilities and Consumer Discretionary sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 2.83% and 0.42% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Energy and Healthcare sectors were the top-losing sectors, losing 0.49% and 0.48% respectively in their index values.



Evolution Mining Limited (ASX: EVN) and AGL Energy Limited (ASX: AGL) were the top gainers, with 7.493% and 6.365% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Boral Limited (ASX: BLD) and Boss Energy Limited (ASX: BOE) were the top losers, with 4.508% and 3.434% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • Rio Tinto experienced a 0.5% decline in its stock value after reporting a reduction in iron ore production and shipments during the first quarter of this year.

  • Droneshield, a defense technology company, soared by 16.9% to $1.11 after securing a contract with NATO.

  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average concluded the session with a 0.17% gain, while the S&P 500 retreated by 0.21%, and the NASDAQ closed lower by 0.12%.

  • The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong decreased by 0.40%, while the FTSE 100 index in London dropped by 1.82% throughout the day.
