ASX/200 Closed lower by 0.11%, Dragged down by Telecommunications Services
By the end of the trading session on 02 April 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.11% and settled at 7,887.90. Out of 11 sectors, 08 closed lower along with the ASX 200.
Materials and Energy sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.08% and 0.62% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Telecommunication Services and Healthcare sector was the top-losing sector, losing 0.98% and 0.94% respectively in their index values.
West African Resources Limited (ASX: WAF) and Evolution Mining Limited (ASX: EVN) were the top gainers, with 6.250% and 5.865% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Orora Limited (ASX: ORA) and Megaport Limited (ASX: MP1) were the top losers, with 14.706% and 6.538% drop in share prices, respectively.
Austal surged by 10.5% to $2.43 following confirmation of a takeover bid from Hanwha Ocean, a South Korean shipbuilder, at $2.825 per share.
Paladin Energy rose by 4.7% to $1.44 after achieving its first uranium production from the Langer Heinrich mine in Namibia.
Mesoblast, an Australian biotech firm, soared by 71.2% to 95¢, extending gains from the previous week when the US Food and Drug Administration permitted the company to resubmit a drug application.
Oil prices increased due to concerns about tightening crude supplies in the Americas, while an Israeli strike in Syria raised fears of escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The Dow closed down by 0.60%, the S&P 500 dropped by 0.20%, and the NASDAQ finished higher by 0.11%.
The Hang Seng index surged by 2.08%, and the FTSE 100 gained 0.26% during the day.
