Highlights

  • BlueScope raises first-half FY2027 underlying EBIT guidance to nearly AU$1.1 billion, exceeding its previous AU$960 million upper estimate.
  • North American earnings are projected to increase by approximately two-thirds compared with second-half FY2026.
  • Buildings and Coated Products North America anticipates 50% earnings growth, supported by stronger steel pricing.

BlueScope Steel Raises First-Half FY2027 Earnings Outlook

BlueScope Steel Limited (ASX: BSL) announced an upgrade to its first-half FY2027 earnings guidance on 26 October 2026, reflecting stronger operational performance across its North American and Australian businesses. The company now expects underlying earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to approach AU$1.1 billion, surpassing its previous forecast range of AU$860 million to AU$960 million. Following the announcement, BlueScope shares were trading at AU$32.760, registering a gain of 1.236%.

North American Earnings Set to Rise on Stronger Steel Demand and Margins

BlueScope expects its North American operations to deliver earnings approximately two-thirds higher than the second half of FY2026, supported by favourable steel market conditions and improved operating efficiency. North Star is anticipated to achieve a substantial earnings improvement, primarily benefiting from stronger US steel spreads and increased shipment volumes. Expected benchmark US mini-mill spreads have risen to approximately US$810 per tonne from the earlier assumption of US$750 per tonne. Additionally, North Star's debottlenecking project is supporting higher anticipated dispatch volumes. Buildings and Coated Products North America is also projected to generate earnings approximately 50% above second-half FY2026 levels, driven by improved sales volumes and stronger realised pricing at Steelscape, alongside better operating margins within Buildings North America.

Australian Steel Products Shows Stronger Performance

BlueScope's Australian Steel Products division is expected to deliver earnings approaching twice the level recorded in the second half of FY2026. Resilient domestic demand, increased steel shipments and favourable realised spreads are anticipated to offset slightly weaker benchmark pricing assumptions. Higher-value product sales have further supported the division's improved earnings outlook.

Outlook and Future Prospects

The revised guidance reflects stronger earnings expectations across BlueScope's key operating businesses, while forecasts for its remaining divisions remain broadly unchanged. Looking ahead, sustained steel demand, pricing conditions and operational efficiency will be important factors influencing profitability. Investors will receive further perspectives on the company's business environment when BlueScope convenes its annual shareholder meeting on 16 November 2026.

The upgraded forecast indicates improved near-term earnings momentum, although changing market conditions could affect future results.
