Could Russia’s Gold Reserve Sell-Off Reshape Global Markets as China and Poland Buy?
Source: Kapitales Research
Highlights:
Russia's gold reserves hit their lowest level since 2019, raising fresh fiscal concerns.
Kazakhstan prepares to reduce gold holdings while China and Poland pursue contrasting strategies.
Diverging central bank decisions raise questions about gold's next major market direction.
Russia Accelerates Gold Sales Amid Budget Pressures
Russia's central bank has continued reducing its gold reserves as mounting fiscal pressures reshape its reserve management strategy. In September 2026, holdings declined by approximately 6.2 tonnes to 72.8 million troy ounces, marking their lowest level since late 2019.
Since December 2025, Russia has reduced its gold holdings by approximately 62 tonnes. The withdrawals coincide with a projected budget deficit of 7.3 trillion rubles, reflecting growing fiscal challenges associated with military expenditure and weaker energy revenues.
Central Banks Adopt Diverging Gold Strategies
While Russia continues liquidating reserves, other central banks are pursuing different approaches to gold management.
Kazakhstan: Plans to reduce gold's share of total reserves from approximately 78% to 75%, potentially realising gains accumulated through earlier purchases.
Poland: Continues strengthening its gold reserves, approaching its targeted holdings of 700 tonnes.
China: Remains an important destination for Russian gold exports, although the proportion originating from official reserves remains unverified.
These contrasting decisions demonstrate how national fiscal requirements, reserve diversification and monetary priorities influence central bank gold transactions.
Gold Market Faces Shifting Demand Dynamics
Despite Russia's selling activity, broader gold market fundamentals remain influenced by investment demand, geopolitical uncertainty and central bank accumulation. Gold prices advanced 67.4% in 2025 before declining 4.4% during the first nine months of 2026. Market participants are assessing whether additional reserve sales could increase supply pressure or whether continued purchases elsewhere might absorb the impact.
Outlook: Will Central Bank Demand Support Gold Prices?
Gold's short-term price movements are likely to reflect shifts in central bank reserve sales, institutional buying activity and broader global economic developments. Although Russia's reserve reductions highlight financial pressures, they do not necessarily indicate a coordinated global withdrawal from gold. Continued purchases by other central banks could provide underlying demand support, while persistent fiscal strains and price volatility remain important risks.
Investors should monitor reserve disclosures, geopolitical developments and monetary policy expectations to assess gold's evolving outlook.
