Cochlear’s ASX Growth Plans Face Execution Test as Profit Outlook Holds Steady
Source: Kapitales Research
Highlights
FY2027 underlying profit guidance remains AU$330 million–AU$350 million following a challenging year.
Nexa exceeded 95% of developed-market implant sales by June, supporting higher pricing.
Referral expansion and implant innovation underpin efforts to reach more eligible adults.
Cochlear Limited (ASX: COH) outlined its growth priorities in its annual general meeting addresses released on 26 October 2026, with its shares at a current market price of AU$144.80, down 1.4%. The hearing implant manufacturer maintained its earnings outlook, leaving investors assessing whether product innovation and tighter execution can strengthen performance.
Profit Outlook Holds Steady
Cochlear reaffirmed FY2027 underlying net profit guidance of AU$330 million to AU$350 million, unchanged from August.
FY2026 sales revenue reached AU$2.3 billion, increasing 2% in constant currency, while underlying net profit totalled AU$322 million. Earnings missed initial expectations but finished near the top of April’s revised guidance. Revenue growth improved during the second half.
European healthcare capacity constraints and industrial action, US insurance delays, Chinese reimbursement changes, Middle East disruption and currency headwinds weighed on performance.
Nexa Gains Commercial Traction
By June, Nexa accounted for more than 95% of implant sales in developed markets, alongside an average price increase of 3%. Its upgradeable technology also supports future implant development.
Cochlear has invested approximately 12% of annual sales in research and development for more than 40 years.
Pivotal studies for its drug-eluting electrode are complete, with results being analysed before subsequent regulatory steps. Recruitment has also concluded for pivotal studies of its totally implantable cochlear implant, designed to operate without an external sound processor. Recipients have accumulated over 1,000,000 hours using the technology.
Expanding Access Remains Crucial
Cochlear supported more than 55,000 implant recipients in FY2026, estimating lifetime net societal benefits exceeding AU$9 billion.
Nevertheless, fewer than 5% of eligible adults receive implants. Clinical practice guidelines are being implemented across 25 countries to improve treatment pathways.
Its team serves more than 180 countries, while employee engagement remained above 80%.
Outlook
Cochlear’s priorities include reducing fixed costs, strengthening medical referrals and expanding adoption of products such as Osia 3. Its reaffirmed guidance provides an earnings benchmark, while sustained improvement will depend on converting unmet patient need into treatment and managing operating pressures.
