Fortescue Iron Ore Talks With China Stall, Sending Shares to a One-Year Low

Fortescue Iron Ore Talks With China Stall, Sending Shares to a One-Year Low Source: Kapitales Research

Highlights

  • Fortescue shares closed at AU$14.57, down 4.52%, after the miner said a lack of a deal with China's state buyer could affect operations.
  • Sales trailed shipments by 3.9Mt in the September quarter, and stockpiles are tipped to rise by another 4–5Mt in October.
  • Miners led the losses as the sector gauge, S&P/ASX 200 Materials, slid 1.96% to 22,198.8, while the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 eased 0.43% to 8,793.2.

Introduction

The Fortescue iron ore dispute with China has moved from a pricing headache to an operational risk. Fortescue Ltd (ASX: FMG) released its September quarter production report on Thursday. The miner said production could be adjusted if Beijing's central buyer, China Mineral Resources Group, known as CMRG, has not settled terms with it by 31 December. Fortescue closed at AU$14.57, down 4.52%, after touching AU$14.54, its lowest level in a year. The stock is down about 34% since the end of 2025.

What the Quarterly Showed

The Pilbara producer moved 46.8Mt of iron ore during the three months to 30 September. Volumes slipped 6% on the prior corresponding quarter. Planned port maintenance played a part.

The bigger issue was demand. Sales of 42.9Mt left 3.9Mt shipped but unsold, a gap Fortescue tied to the CMRG talks. The company expects stockpiles to grow by another 4–5Mt in October.

Costs went the wrong way. Hematite C1 unit costs rose 21% year on year to US$21.98 per wet metric tonne, with higher fuel costs adding about US$1.40. The average hematite price received fell 10% to US$79.79 per dry metric tonne, or 82% of the quarter's average 61% Fe benchmark of US$96.92.

Why the CMRG Talks Matter

CMRG is the state-backed body that buys iron ore on behalf of Chinese steelmakers. Fortescue said it is still talking with CMRG and wants a deal reached in good faith on proper market terms.

Shipment guidance for FY27 has been held at 197–207Mt, with 11–14Mt of that from Iron Bridge on a 100% basis. Iron Bridge shipped 2.5Mt in the quarter. However, the company made clear that this target depends on the talks.

The balance sheet has also shifted. A US$1.0 billion final dividend and US$916 million of capital expenditure and investments drained cash in the quarter. As a result, net debt climbed to US$2.8 billion by quarter-end, up from US$0.9 billion three months earlier.

Share Price Movement

The miners were the main drag on the market. Resource stocks pushed S&P/ASX 200 Materials 1.96% lower to 22,198.8. The broader S&P/ASX 200 benchmark eased 0.43% to 8,793.2.

Larger peers also weakened. BHP Group Limited (ASX: BHP) closed at AU$57.13, down 2.41%. Rio Tinto Limited (ASX: RIO) ended at AU$150.30, down 1.47%. Mineral Resources Limited (ASX: MIN) finished at AU$44.25, down 2.40%.

What Investors Should Watch

  • Any sign of a pricing agreement between Fortescue and CMRG before year-end.
  • Whether inventory keeps rising beyond the 4–5Mt flagged for October.
  • Movements in fuel costs and in the discount Fortescue accepts on its hematite.

Conclusion

Fortescue has kept its FY27 shipment range, but that guidance now hinges on a deal with China's central buyer. Unsold tonnes are piling up, costs are higher, and net debt has climbed. The share price reaction shows how sensitive the stock is to the outcome. The coming weeks of negotiation will be closely watched across the sector.
