  • ASX precious metals stocks suffer widespread losses, with some miners recording double-digit declines.

Gold and Silver Prices Decline Amid Inflation Concerns

Gold and silver prices declined on 22 October 2026 as escalating Middle East tensions, rising energy costs and uncertainty surrounding US monetary policy weighed on precious metals markets.

Gold fell 1.25% on the day to US$4,089.25 per ounce, and is down 4.61% over the month and 0.89% over the year. Silver faced sharper selling pressure, dropping 2.84% to US$56.309 per ounce. Despite gaining 15.08% over the past year, silver has declined 12.64% over the past month.

The downturn extended to Australian-listed precious metals companies, reflecting weaker investor sentiment across the sector.

Middle East Tensions and US Rate Outlook Pressure Bullion

Renewed geopolitical tensions have complicated the outlook for precious metals. Crude oil prices climbed after an attempted drone strike on Saudi Aramco’s Shaybah oilfield reportedly left two people dead from falling debris. Meanwhile, US authorities instructed certain diplomatic personnel and their families to leave Saudi Arabia, intensifying concerns about regional security.

Higher energy prices have increased inflation risks, potentially limiting the Federal Reserve’s flexibility to ease monetary policy. Although the Fed is widely expected to hold interest rates at its upcoming meeting, investors continue to assess the possibility of further tightening in December. Rising US Treasury yields have also pressured bullion, as higher returns on interest-bearing assets reduce the relative attractiveness of non-yielding gold and silver.

ASX Silver Mining Stocks Face Selling Pressure

Australian-listed silver-focused companies recorded notable share price declines during the session.

  • Silver Mines Limited (ASX: SVL): Shares traded at a current market price (CMP) of AU$0.105, down approximately 4.55%.
  • Polymetals Resources Ltd (ASX: POL): Shares traded at a CMP of AU$0.545, down approximately 3.54%.
  • Argent Minerals Limited (ASX: ARD): Shares traded at a CMP of AU$0.018, down approximately 2.63%.
  • Unico Silver Limited (ASX: USL): Shares traded at a CMP of AU$0.585, down approximately 2.50%.
  • Sun Silver Limited (ASX: SS1): Shares traded at a CMP of AU$0.785, down approximately 1.88%.

The widespread weakness highlights investor caution towards silver exploration and development companies amid volatile commodity prices.

ASX Gold Miners Record Widespread Losses

Gold-focused mining companies also faced substantial selling pressure, with several recording notable declines.

  • Brightstar Resources Limited (ASX: BTR): Shares traded at a CMP of AU$0.565, down approximately 15.67%.
  • Dateline Resources Limited (ASX: DTR): Shares traded at a CMP of AU$0.077, down approximately 11.49%.
  • Regis Resources Limited (ASX: RRL): Shares traded at a CMP of AU$6.380, down approximately 4.35%.
  • Vault Minerals Limited (ASX: VAU): Shares traded at a CMP of AU$5.570, down approximately 3.63%.
  • Capricorn Metals Ltd (ASX: CMM): Shares traded at a CMP of AU$13.450, down approximately 3.10%.
  • Northern Star Resources Ltd (ASX: NST): Shares traded at a CMP of AU$24.790, down approximately 1.08%.

Outlook: Can Precious Metals Recover?

The near-term direction of gold and silver will likely depend on US inflation developments, Treasury yields and geopolitical conditions. While persistent Middle East uncertainty could support safe-haven demand, expectations of higher interest rates may continue to restrict any price recovery.

For ASX-listed precious metals companies, commodity price stability and company-specific operational developments will remain important drivers of investor confidence.
