Mid-Market: S&P/ASX 200 Trading Lower; Oil Sinks To Lowest Level Since 2021

On 17 December 2025, at AEDT 12.10 PM, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 is trading lower today, declining 29.30 points or 0.34%, and is currently trading at 8,569.60 levels. Out of 11, 9 sectors are trading lower along with the decline in the S&P/ASX 200.

The Materials and A-REIT sectors are the top 2 gaining sectors, gaining 0.58% and 0.13% in their index values. On the other hand, Energy and Utilities sectors are the top 2 declining sectors, declining 1.66% and 1.01% in their index values.

IGO Limited (ASX: IGO) and Liontown Limited (ASX: LTR) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 9.722% and 8.856% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Graincorp Limited (ASX: GNC) and Austal Limited (ASX: ASB) are the top-losing stocks and are declining by 12.411% and 11.327% in their stock prices.

Factors influencing the market-

  • The Australian share market is declining today, following losses on Wall Street, as oil prices slid to their lowest level in nearly five years and weak US employment data failed to strengthen expectations of additional interest-rate cuts by the Federal Reserve.
  • Energy stocks underperformed, led by a 2.5% decline in Woodside, as Brent crude fell about 2% to around US$59 a barrel, its lowest level since 2021, amid expectations the war in Ukraine could draw to a close.
  • Santos Limited’s share slipped 0.9% after announcing a conditional sale to divest its 42.86% operated stake in the Mahalo Joint Venture in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, while its PNG LNG project also repaid debt ahead of schedule.
  • GrainCorp Limited’s shares plunged 12.42% after agreeing to sell its stake in GrainsConnect Canada, a deal expected to result in a loss of between $5 million and $10 million.
  • Humm Group surged 9.9% after Credit Corp launched a takeover proposal for the fintech, offering a scheme of arrangement at 77 cents a share or an off-market bid at 72 cents.
  • The Dow Jones closed down by 0.62%, S&P 500 declined by 0.24% and Nasdaq was up by 0.23% in the previous session.
  • Hang Seng is down by 1.64%, and FTSE 100 is down by 0.68%.
