Whitehaven Slips on ASX as Stronger Production Meets a Crucial Cash Flow Test
Source: Kapitales Research
Highlights
Coal production increased, although export disruptions delayed shipments and reduced quarterly sales.
Annual forecasts remain unchanged, with shipment recovery expected during the December quarter.
Production Growth Meets Shipping Challenges
Whitehaven Coal Limited (ASX: WHC) released its September quarterly production report on 23 October 2026, with its current market price at AU$7.490, down 2%, according to supplied market figures. The company reported stronger mining output, but delayed exports and higher debt placed attention on its ability to convert production gains into cash.
Managed run-of-mine production reached 11.0 million tonnes, increasing 3% compared to the June quarter and 22% annually. Saleable production rose 5% sequentially to approximately 8.5 million tonnes.
Port Interruptions Delay Sales
Equity sales of produced coal declined 5% sequentially to 6.0 million tonnes. Disruptions at RG Tanna and PWCS loading terminals shifted some shipments into the December quarter.
Managed closing coal inventories increased 37% to approximately 5.3 million tonnes. Queensland production fell 4% sequentially to 5.5 million tonnes, while NSW delivered 5.5 million tonnes, up 10%, supported by improved Narrabri output.
Higher Prices Offset Fuel Pressure
Average achieved coal pricing increased 2% sequentially and 20% annually to AU$226 per tonne. Queensland operations received AU$257 per tonne, while NSW achieved AU$198 per tonne.
Unit costs remained near the lower end of FY27 guidance of AU$132–AU$147 per tonne, excluding royalties. Diesel averaged approximately AU$1.38 per litre, exceeding the AU$1.16 assumption incorporated into midpoint cost guidance.
Debt and Acquisition Payments Remain Important
Net debt climbed approximately AU$100 million to AU$1.4 billion. Cash outflows included AU$61 million in shareholder distributions and AU$84 million for an acquisition-related contingent payment.
The company bought back 1.8 million shares for AU$14 million. Remaining acquisition obligations include US$100 million payable in April 2027, followed by the final contingent payment in July.
Outlook
Whitehaven retained FY27 managed production guidance of 38.0–41.0 million tonnes, managed sales of 30.4–33.0 million tonnes and equity sales of 23.9–26.0 million tonnes. Capital expenditure guidance remains AU$390–AU$490 million.
Management expects inventory and receivables pressures to ease during the December quarter. Recovering shipments could improve cash generation, although port performance and the timing of customer receipts remain important to that recovery.
