Liontown Advances Kathleen Valley into Full Underground Lithium Production
Liontown Limited (ASX: LTR) has achieved a key operational milestone with the on-time completion of open pit mining at its Kathleen Valley Lithium Operation, marking the project’s successful shift to a fully underground mining model. The open pit phase, which ran for three years, played a critical role in establishing site infrastructure, including construction of the run-of-mine pad and tailings storage facility, while also providing initial ore for plant commissioning and ramp-up. Strong open pit performance in recent quarters exceeded targets, resulting in strategic ore stockpiles that enhance operational flexibility and secure mill feed through to early FY27. Underground mining activities are scaling as intended, with development and output advancing according to schedule and operational systems demonstrating consistent and reliable performance. The operation is prioritising high-margin ore and has the flexibility to scale output in response to market conditions. Following the completion of this transition, Kathleen Valley is well placed to enter its next stage of growth as Australia’s inaugural large-scale underground lithium operation.
