ASX/200 Closed Higher by 1.09%, Lifted by Information Technology
By the end of trading session on 10 March 2026, benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed 1.09% higher at 8,692.60. Out of 11 sectors, 09 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.
Information Technology and Materials was the top-gaining sector, gaining 1.94% and 1.87% in its value. On the other hand, Energy and Consumer Staples were the top-losing sectors, losing 2.91% and 0.31% in its value.
Life360 Inc. (ASX: 360) and Neuren Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: NEU) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 10.343% and 9.161% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Pantoro Gold Limited (ASX: PNR) and Helia Group Limited (ASX: HLI) are the top-losing stocks, losing 22.495% and 16.284% in their stock prices.
Shares in explosives and mining chemicals supplier Orica declined 3.4 per cent to $20.92 after the company indicated that first-half earnings growth is expected to be modest. The company also announced the launch of a $100 million cost-reduction initiative aimed at improving efficiency.
Meanwhile, Fortescue rose 1.2 per cent to $19.27 after confirming the completion of its acquisition of Alta Copper, giving the mining group full ownership of the Cañariaco copper project in northern Peru.
In the aviation sector, Air New Zealand withdrew its full-year earnings outlook as escalating tensions in the Middle East drove a sharp rise in jet fuel prices. Shares of the airline, which is currently reporting losses, fell 3.8 per cent to 38.5 cents, extending the 8 per cent decline recorded on Monday.
In the cryptocurrency market, Bitcoin climbed back above US$70,000 for the first time in four days after concerns surrounding the Iran conflict eased following comments from US President Donald Trump.
Gold prices also moved higher after signals from the US President suggested the conflict in the Middle East could be approaching a resolution. The comments contributed to a decline in oil prices, which supported gains in the precious metal.
Global equity markets reflected ongoing volatility. In the United States, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.50 per cent, while the S&P 500 increased 0.83 per cent and the Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.38 per cent.
In Asia, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was trading 2.06 per cent higher, while in Europe, the FTSE 100 slipped 0.34 per cent during the session.
